Ballard and North
Ballard is distinctly Norweigan. Here Swedes, Finns, Danes and Norwegians all live in this community incorporated in 1888 and annexed in 1906 by Seattle. While the Ballard neighborhoods are still very Scandinavian, it is growing more multi-ethnic.
The marine industry has historically been a pivotal one here and to some extent still is. Nearby are the Ballard Locks (officially the Hiram M. Chittenden Locks), and the Carl S. English Jr. Botanical Gardens.
The Ballard Community Center offers a number of traditional and nontraditional unique classes, from cooking to ethnic arts and crafts. The Nordic Heritage Museum and Ballard Public Pool are also community hubs.
A variety of housing styles can be found here, including new construction, and Mench-built houses (named after their 1940's architect). Suffice it to say that you can pretty much find anything from early-century bungalows to modern new construction.
